How to improve a confocal microscope?

Hi, any idea about an improvement of a confocal microscope.? How is possible to build it trying to save money. Maybe using photodiodes as detector instead of photomultipiers?Any other suggestion?

Any gains from changing the physical equipment will be relatively minor. You are more likely to see real improvements by changing the software package that manipulates the data
