How to improve a shopping site? :D

Question

Someone in my family has started to make their own on-line store .. I'm not really doing much of a help so I decided to ASK this question :) What would prevent you from buying? How does the site look and feel?

I know it's not the best or anything but this is like his second site.. How would I let others know about it? He calls his friends/gives out flyer's in a busy street/gives out his cards.. but it's not helping that much..

If it looks cheap and the contact info is just a generic email , depends what they take for payment are some of the things I look at, also is it easy to navigate..
