Question:

How to improve at volleyball???

I'm a freshman on my school's JV volleyball team. I'm 5'10 1/2" and an outside hitter. This was my first year playing and the season went well. I had a stable position switching with my libero but I still need to improve. I can tip low by the ten foot line but I can't tip deep. I end up carrying the ball instead. Also, my serves aren't as consistent as I'd like them to be and I need help with digging. I'm alright at passing but there's always room for improvement. It's the off season now but I'm doing a club. I'm also starting a regular workout soon to improve my vertical and arm strength but what else can I do to up my game???

  1. Just keep at it.  Practice as much as you can.  Serve out in your yard if you can, it helps.  I played for 5 years.  Work on aiming your serve specific places, that's an awesome skill to have.  Good luck!

  2. Purchase a cheap rubber volleyball or called a practice volleyball, this cheap one can be used outside on all hard and rough surfaces. Find a wall to spike against. Toss it up like a set and then spike it. Do it for 20 minutes or so regularly - so that any kind of set, your can spike it. If you get bored, and swap over to your other arm - because sometimes you're in the wrong position - and so -- why not spike it there too? The idea is to get the elbow speed (bent elbow that straightens) for your spike, upon contact - you add the wrist action, adding the spin. This is for your spike serve too. You really need to practice with someone else too (the more the better) - so that you can dig, set and spike at each other. You don't need a net to do this. The practice is needed so that your ball handling skills are now natural for you - and also for wayward balls - to do something with them, so that you'll become a good ball chaser - and can even set, while chasing the ball. In the off season you need to practice, so that when you start up again, you'll be red hot - and even better during the season you're playing.. Volleyball can be all year round - you just need to be in contact with other keen volleyballers - so as to get together often...

  3. i had a problem with the refs calling me for "carrying the ball" when in fact it was a legal hit/tip.

but if you want to tip deep  just do your approach and  then at the last second go with two hands and kind of "shoot" the ball into the back corners if the defense is playing up. if they are playing back a good place to dump it is to the center by the net (usually where the bball jump circle is).

also, even though you are tall, you can still be a good passer(im 5'11+ and played all the way around, & just back row in a few games), it wouldn't hurt to work on leg strength and speed from a low position. try squats and shuffling and running sideways staying as low as you can.

also, i cannot tell you how lucky you are to have a coach that supports you. if you had one like I did in 8th grade you will go places. (if you have one like i do now.ehhhh*shudder* but i digress...).

come in early to your club practices if you can, and ask your coach to help you with your serves. start off by concentrating on your toss. then hit it over and over, eventually working your way further away from the net. some people are naturally good servers. but most good servers are those with thousands of repetitions with proper technique.

also, start going to summer camps at local universities/colleges -big help with your game & getting your face out there.

  4. well, I don't know much about volleyball, so the only thing I can tell you is practice. I think that's the best way of improvement.

  5. i am only an eighth grader but our volleyball team came in first for the tourney and for season and our coach was reall good at explaining things to us so i think i can help u out a bit.

you can take a rubber ball, or a volleyball if you have one, and find a blank wall in your home.  you can practice servin and spikin drills then.

you can do these at home or at the gym

for tipping i cant really help bc im not a setter.

but for digging we learned a way to practice.

you can do this with a partner or without.... if u do have a partner have them gently toss u the ball for this

    1. get in your ready stance

    2. just practice throwin your body outward

    3. be sure to swing your arms up before u hit the ground

our coach always told us to worry about the ball not the floor, cuz the floor's always gonna be there afterward

    4. after u hit the ball u should sprawl out on the ground, wit ur arms goin to ur sides.... u should slide a little bit on the ground.

the only thing i can say for passing is to keep your eyes on the ball, and keep your arms flat and straight.  and DONT swing ur arms, u gotta step and push urself up with your legs.  u will end up swingin ur arms but only a little bit

    hope this helps ^^

  6. The biggest key to improvement in volleyball is to get as much time on the court as you possibly can, and if you can't get on the court, have a volleyball in your hands. Any chance you get to play doubles, even just a pickup game, is good for you because it makes you learn all parts of the game...
