  1. practise like mad you should start playing with other people to get a flow if you want to be a guard if your practicing alone yourmost likely to become a post cause your probably mostly only working on your shoooting deking and layups and dribbling

  2. Learn the game. understand the purpose of moves. that is such a big issue now and days. people can have all the talent in the world and be dumb as far as basketball IQ goes. being a smart player will help you make up for any physical shortcomings, IE Kevin Love.

know why certain moves are effective, this way you can make the most of all of your moves. what makes the crossover so effective? its the ability to be able to go either way, left or right. so the most effective cross overs involve you simulating a drive and "crossing over" into the opposite direction. for what ever reason, i see people who do crossovers that dont look believable. study the way you dribble, tailor these moves into your dribbling style. look at how the top guards play, how they dribble. tim hardaway and iverson have two of the most effective crossovers in NBA history. yet their is a distinct difference between the two. if you can understand why, it will make your handle that much more dangerous.

shooting is nothing but repetition, practice the way you would shoot in a game. if you are practicing, the height of your shot, the amount of energy you put into it, should be the same all the time. if you shoot differently at the park than you do in a game, you're gonna be a inconsistent shooter.

DEFENSE!!! you want to secure a spot on the team, take over the starting position? become a defensive specialist. defense is ignored by todays youth. they would much rather score 25 points, than to focus on causing havok on the defensive end of the floor. coaches LOVE these guys. why? because defense is hard, defense is gritty, people dont like playing defense like that, but you have to if you want to win. defensive players make teams, and they get scholorships. think about it, how good does a guard look if you are stopping him from scoring? so not only are you showcasing your skills, you are stopping them from showcasing theirs.

**KD & King make a good point, playing against good competition equals good practice. try to play against the best at your position. dont play against people that you know you can beat. always play against people who skills are above yours. you should always be in a state of improvement. if you are better than people your age, start playing people that are older and smarter.

also understand that basketball is a team game, so make sure that while you are improving your individual skills, you are also improving your team skills. communication, passing, help defense, etc.... this means you're gonna have to start practicing with some of your future team mates. take the initiative and bring together some people with the sole purpose of conditioning and improving for the upcoming season. it will build a team atmosphere and will show the coach that you are serious about playing team basketball. it also builds leadership skills.

  3. practice, practice, practice...get as many hours as you can on the court and look for good competition to practice with. a month isn't very long. Be in the BEST physical shape you can be in!! Coaches will notice that.

  4. Have some one video tape you playing. Go through all the your moves and shots, Then watch the tape and correct anything you see wrong. Like Form on shots and other things that you might not be aware that your doing wrong.
