Question:

How to improve server speed. File sharing on a server.?

I have a computer that holds all my documents.. I want it to hold more stuff that it does now. The computer is running Windows Xp Pro with 128 of ram.

The computer has a hard drive, external. That is used to hold all my docs. It's the computer which is slow. Not my internet connection or the USB.

It doesn't seem like it is throwing out the files fast enough.

Maybe my RAM is the problem?

Should I downgrade to Xp Home? Or linux? Is there a program to speed it up?

Please help somehow.

  1. If you're using it just as a server, use Linux.  Fedora 9 is good and I use it for a server.  Also, more RAM will help; I suggest at least 512 MB.  The fact that you are storing the files on an external drive will slow it down a lot.  Also, consider getting a gigabit NIC.  If the rest of your network supports it, it will greatly increase transfer speed.

  2. 128MB is very low for xp. it is the lowest recommended amount. also having an external hard drive isn't making it any easier. i personally never run xp under 1 gig a ram. if you are running any other program you are going to be bogging down your system.

  3. I would upgrade and improve the server in the following order.

    1. Add RAM - as much as you can afford. It's the most cost effective upgrade you can make

    2. Switch to an Internal hard drive - You will have much higher data transfer rates

    3. Switch to Linux - Linux is a far better server OS than XP and makes better use of computer resources.

Setting up SAMBA is not a walk in the park, but once configured, the system is solid and has higher performance than an XP machine
