Question:

How to improve swimming endurance?

I've started swimming again a few weeks ago, after a 3 years break. I usually go to the pool 5 times per week and swim for 45-60 min. I started from 20 laps (25m pool), now I can do 40, yet still I have to interrupt myself every other lap. Any ideas how to improve my endurance?

I swim mainly to warmup before August, as I plan to seriously start going to the gym again.. And to lose some fat ;) I also jog 3 times per week for about 30 min.

  1. your training consist of three parts quantity, power and endurance so you have to move the 3 equally at first so swim the more quantity in a specific time you can swim a 100 hour without increasing your endurance so you must increase speed too

  2. to improve your endurance, start over. start with something easy, say a 200m (8 laps), and then rest then do another. do a set of 5 total and take a rest in between sets. once you can go without being out of breath do 500m (20 laps). you'll only have to do 2 sets of this but it will be much harder. once you can do that well go again for the 1000m (40 laps)

this will take time to build up to so be patient.

also if startin out with a 200 is too hard try doing a set of 10 100m (4 laps)

  3. Doing the laps for the time you are is an excellent start.

But if you have to stop you are probably pushing too hard. Slow the pace a bit and focus on distance/time without stopping rather than total number of laps. As you can do more without stopping, slowly increase the speed and distance.
