Question:

How to improve the nasty "out-look" of our Trains?

Yesterday, I went to railway station to give a send-off to my friend. When I was standing near the window of the train, I could remember the Hyderabad express, the same out-look as it was in 1977!! Nealy 30 years gone by!! And there is no little improvement found!!

THE WORN OUT COACHES, WELDED AND PROJECTED AWKWARD PIECES HERE AND THERE ERRATICALLY, SHABBY, DUSTY,DILAPATED AND HIGHLY UNCLEAN WE COULD SEE ANY WHERE IN THE WORLD!!

That too for a one day, two days, three days-travelling trains!!

My question is, how come the Govt allowes such "ancient" pieces to move on the rail road?

Let the world community come and put value for the coaches comparitively, we know certainly, they will not put more mark than a " very big Zero"!!

MY question is: Why cant we make 50% railway to privatize, to keep it in competitiveness?

Why cant we do like, we did in Telephones and in Airlines to enjoy good journey experiences?

Other than this, what are the real solutions?

  1. Tell da government ..........................

  2. For the amount Railways charge, even what services they provide are a big thing.

If the public allows/appreciates an increase in rail fare, surely IR can improve its 'out-look'

  3. Telephones and airlines are 2 completely different business models.  Airlines are flooded with government money, including the cost of those fancy new airports.  Railroads just don't get the funding airlines do, although some, and privatizing them would make them go bankrupt within a couple years.

  4. see, this has to be done by our government only,so every people

and welfare organisations must make a demand to government

  5. I fully agree with what you have written. But I don't thing privatisation may alone help to improve the quality. It is Competition which improves services. Look at the Bus Services and new Air lines and telecommunications, Because of keen competition,  these services, conditions of the vehicles and Air crafts have improved considerably. Other important factor for no improvement, is lack of accountability and punishment for poor service. Especially in Government run services any thing and every thing  can be done without fear of punishment.Above all we should have Ministers with quality conscience in giving service to public.

  6. Perhaps if the Indian government spent less money on nuclear weapons they would have more to spend on the trains.

Personally I don't think privatisation is the answer but that is something the Indian people will have to vote on. In the UK the general concensus is that the railways have not improved with privatisation.

The main problems are poor timekeeping and too many cancellations, shortage of rolling stock and expensive fares (on average about 3 times what you'd pay in mainland Europe).

I travel by train a fair bit myself and I don't think the trains are very comfortable but that is more a question of personal taste.

Many of the trains are fairly new but some of them are 30-40 years old and still running - I find the older ones more comfortable, but no doubt many would disagree.

I am surprised that conditions on the Indian Railways are so bad - I'd always heard that the Indian Railway system - one of the largest in the world - was a good one.
