  1. There are several ways to Improve your system performance, First of all check you antivirus updated and Check for viruses on you machine.

    Clean Drives of your machine

If need to then Defrag you hard drives

Clean Internet explorer history ,system Cache files temp files, etc

there are few software availalble on market like Yamisoft windows xp manager try that one they are really good to improve performance.

Note: I recommand at least once in year do clean install this will really help you for same problems. take ghost and formatt hard drive and but your ghost files back on machine.

  2. There are several things that can be done. The most obvious would have to be upgrading and maintenance. PCs will work ok with 512MB but 256 is just not acceptable. 1GB of RAM is good and of course 2GB would be excellent. Another thing that is important is the operating system, what are you running? XP is good but early versions might need to be updated to at least XP service pack 2. if you still a have Windows ME then that would be the main problem. Also, is the machine slow at boot? at log on? or at opening a certain program? Usually slow boot and slow log might be a physical issue with the hard drive, or too many programs or applications been loaded. Check task manager and see if any programs are taking a lot of CPU percentage or if you are running too many programs. might want to uninstall any programs that you do not need or are not using. Have you tried to open the run bar and typing msconfig? msconfig will allow you to configure programs running in your system at startup. also another thing that might speed up the pc are difrag, disk clean up, and virus scanning, so many things that can be done, but checking what processes are using a lot of memory or CPU might help you a lot. Check also for network connection issues such as defective router is internet is the issue, or any setting that could be blocking internet access such as very extrict firewall settings, or a misconfigured antivirus programs.

  3. You forgot to mention one of the most important thing. Your processor (CPU) speed.

Having 2 GB of RAM definitely will help a lot in the multitasking department.
