an environmentalist of international repute Shri Sunderlal Bahuguna said in 1990 that b coz of deforestation, heights of snow on Himalayas(world's largest mountain range having highest peak 'Everest' too) Re receding at the rate of 25 meters per year. He further added that like a bald head, there was no hair to hold water& similarly, mountains need forest to hold additional water. Also, roads made for tourists upto highest possible point near peaks exhaust hot air from petrol vehicles result melting of snow of glaciers resulting reduction in their heights too. I've seen recently large number of vehicles resulted considerable reduction of size of Thajewas & Mantha Glaciers near Sonamarg. Situation is alarming. Quick & drastic actions are needed.
