  1. What kind of crops? =)

Less light than the "crops" were getting for the growth cycle.

If the "crops" are getting 12 hours of light for growth you must reduce the lighting to 6-8 hours each day  for flowering.

  2. Artificial light cycle,

there are ways to accelerate growth cycles too.

  3. Every ones talking about photo periods, don't forget that temperatures  also induce flowering in plants.

  4. I guess you mean flowers. It is more complicated than "12 hours" It has to do with the latitude where the plent adapted and the season where it best competes for reproduction.

Since flowering is the start of the reproductive phase of life, the seeds need to be ready at the right season of the year. You have to fool the plant into "thinking " that it is the right time of the year.

See this text book link. www.sinauer.com/plantphys/24Taiz.pdf

It is a complete book. A little tought to read, but very useful. Read the circadian rythum part arround page 12 and up.

try googling "plants flowering forcing flowering"

  5. Add plenty of bone meal as a nutrient into the soil.  Especially if you are growing a vegetable crop, which requires plenty of phosphorous to enhance bloom and bloom set.  An organic source of phosphorous should be added well in advance of plant maturity so it is available when needed.

Length of sunshine or light only applies to long season crops as far as influencing bloom set.  Short season crops are more dependent on nutrients.

  6. you want the light on your plants to be 12 hours on and 12 hours off, if your outdoors, use a tarp or something to block the lateday sun quicker(put the tarp on the west side of your plants). The key is 12 hours.
