Question:

How to install a new vanity light with no ground wire?

I have an old home (ca. 1907) and have installed many a new fixture, from lights to fans, throughout. However, when recently going to install a new vanity in my bathroom, I stumbled upon something I hadn't encountered before. Basically, the new fixture says to either connect the ground wire from the wall to the fixture, or vice versa, depending on which is present. Thing being is that there is neither a ground wire coming out of the wall, nor do I have a place to connect the ground wire that came with the fixture. Furthermore, the existing fixture also has its own ground wire, but it too isn't connected to anything (it's just coiled up). All things said, since the existing fixture was installed without it and has functioned with no problems, am I safe to just install the new fixture in the same fashion? Thanks!

  1. You may connect a 14 gage wire to the ground wire on the fixture or by making a hole in the base of the fixture and connecting the other end of the wire the electrical box in the wall or , to the cold water pipe in the wall for your sink basin . AND the circuit that that light is on NEEDS TO BE ON A   G.F.I. [ ground fault interrupting ] CIRCUIT  BREAKER or OUTLET ! You may also have a listened electrician install it for you to make sure that it and everything else is SAFE !

  2. In the old style houses...most don't have ground wires.  U either put the ground wire wrap to 1 of the screws that holds the lite or just leave it alone.
