  1. You are going to need a 15 mm pedal wrench and a 8 mm allen wrench with a long handle. The 15 mm pedal wrench is for your old pedals and the allen wrench is for the your eggbeaters which don't have flats for a 15 mm wrench.

It takes a fair amount of force to remove the pedals, so get ready to use some muscle. And the left pedal is threaded backwards to prevent you from unthreading them while pedaling. To install the left pedal turn the pedal threads counterclockwise, otherwise you will ruin the threads.

Park  tool makes a 15 mm pedal wrench/chain whip combo I'd recommend as well as a padded 15 mm pedal wrench. The combo is cheaper and it combines two tools in one, but the padded wrench is longer, more comfortable to use and has more leverage.

You can buy a set of allen wrenches (preferably with a ball end) that include 8 mm at Sears, Kmart or auto supply stores. Do not buy the jacknife style because they do not have enough leverage. Or you can probably buy one at your local bike store too because Park also makes one specifically for pedals.

Keep it in the big ring.

  2. Hey Paul,

You really need a 15mm pedal wrench to install those babies. You shouldn't have any compatibility issues...make sure you lube the threads on the pedal and keep in mind that, because of the torque of pedaling, they may be designed to thread in a direction that doesn't seem correct but is. That is about the extent that I can offer short of recommending the trip to the local bike shop.

  3. Insert an appropriately sized allen/hex key into the axle behind the crank arms - It's easy to work out which direction it needs to be screwed in - It's done in such a way so that it doesn't unscrew when you pedal.

My egbeaters don't have markings for left or right (well not that I could see...) The left pedal is identified by an extra little ridge just before the threaded section of the axle.

  4. 1.  Remember that the left side pedal is reverse threaded

    2.  You SHOULD be able to thread the new pedals most of the way in by hand with no wrench at all.   You still need the 15 mm to tighten them properly.   If you can't do it by hand, your cranks may have been crossthreaded at som point.

    3.   Check the pedals for "R" and "L" markings to be sure you're using the proper one on each side.
