How to install standard washer/dryer under a counter?

I want to install standard front-loading washer and dryer (not combo) under a counter. What is the easiest way to hook up the dryer vent and washer hoses? Hook up and then push the units back? Hook up and THEN install the counter? Removable counter? I can see lots of headaches if something goes wrong with one of the machines.
