Question:

How to introduce new solids?

My 6 month old son just started on "solids." He ate rice cereal twice a day for one month, then for his first food we offered him avocado. He loved it! He ate one ice-cube sized serving (his food is all being home-made) each afternoon for five days. Yesterday, day number six we tried a new food instead- green beans. He gagged so much he actually threw up a bit!! Having tried them myself, I believe it may have been the texture (they're a bit coarse) not the flavor.

So. WHAT DO I DO NOW?

I can't give him a new food for a few days because I want to make certain he isn't allergic to the green beans, but I've read that he shouldn't be exposed to one food for too long or he risks BECOMING allergic, so I don't want to give him more avocado and nothing else. I thought of perhaps mixing green beans with his cereal to get him used to the texture... any other thoughts?

  1. The chances of him being allergic to the beens is very low. You could try something else and if he does seem to have a reaction you'll be able to pinpoint it to the beens and only 1 other thing. Or you can try making the beans a more favourable texture. It could have been the taste... my daughter did that with brocolli... she can't stand it, gags and spits it out but takes everything else fine even in courser textures.

  2. Did you try and put breastmilk or formula in with it to get the texture how you want it??  If not then you should try that!  It will def help you get the texture you like and then hopefully your baby will like it better!  Good luck!!

  3. First try to strain the green beans so that the texture is more smooth, then I would add a little bit to the cereal.

Maybe for your next veggie, try something that is smooth like squash or yams?

  4. mix the green beans with the cereal, then slowly add more greens until its just greens atleast until u get over the trisl period and feel comfy offering something else. try sweet potato next, most babies love it, greens can tend to b strong! have him try it for 3 days then move on!
