How to keep a canter going?

I'm just starting to learn how to canter. I can get the horse to start, but I can't keep it going? any tips?

  1. Do the same thing to keep it going as you do to start.  Periodically when you feel the horse slow down, kiss and squeeze with your legs.  You'll probably have to kiss and squeeze as the horse goes around the turns because they tend to get slower there.  It helps your horse keep going if you stand up off his back a little bit... it takes your weight off a little so they can move more easily... if you do stand up into a half seat, it can help if you sit down to squeeze and drive with your seat as the horse goes around the turns.  Just keep trying and keep using your legs.  It's tough when you start because your legs aren't strong enough, but it will get easier as you get stronger.
