Question:

How to keep a single guinea pig?

The situation is that we are adopting a young guinea pig, we have 3 guinea pigs living outside currently but there is not enough room for 4.

The youngest of the current 3 does get left out alot, and not wanting to keep the the new guinea pig on its own, we would buy another cage and move the youngest of the 3 into the other cage with the newest guinea pig. They are both around the same age (12weeks).

So I'm really wondering if it was possible to keep the newest guinea pig

by himself or take the youngest of the 3 out and let it live with the new one. Would this have any negative effects or anything really i should be concerned about?

  1. guinea pigs dont do well on their own . when one of mine died the other one wasnt long after it . you could see it wasnt happy. if you dont want to breed then get another male.

  2. no not really you shoud just divide it since you have 2 cages put 2 in this cage and 2 in the other!

  3. guinea pigs are gregarious & I wouldnt keep one on his own. ok if very temporary - but its not much fun, if any, for one to be alone.

    hope u solve the problem.

    gd luck

  4. My Guinea Pig is fine by herself. I don't think you should seperate the little Guinea Pig clique. If they already have a dominance thing going on then the one you take out will put the new one in it's place.

  5. have you seen http://www.guineapigcages.com

  6. i think they are better not alone. if the 3rd one doesn't mind being taken out, I'd put him with the newbie. If #3 does want to stay in his herd, you will probably find that you will want to get a friend for newbie shortly.

you will find that the new one will keep wanting to see whats going on in the other cage because it's lonely.

  7. I have one guinea pig. She's great.

  8. it is definitely possible, but think about whether you have the ability to keep 4 guinea pigs. I have had 2 and they cost me so much i had to give them away. and since you said there's not enough room for 4 i really suggest don't get another guinea pig.
