There is these birds who are making a mud-type nest on the top of my front door, but before that they had a nest there and by the time we found out, they had little baby birds so we just left it alone until they all hatched and grew and flew.

Now that they are all grown up we took down the nest hoping they would go make a nest somewhere else. and the reason we took it down is cause there was mud everywhere. we have a glass window on top of the door and the door steps were all filled with their p**p.

But the thing is they kept trying to come back and make their nest. So is there anything we can do to have them go away and not nest there?

  1. Block the area off with a screen or some sort of mesh netting.  Keep in mind it is only legal to destory a nest that is not active yet..once they lay eggs it would be illegal for you to take down.  Block the area before they start again as you also do not want them wasting too much time and energy building a nest that they are not going to be able to use.

  2. Block the area - even a temporary fix will work.

They need a ledge, or something to affix the nest.  Blocking off the area, or creating a sloped surface will make nesting impossible.

  3. They make fake snakes and owls you can hang in the area.

Try placing a rubber snake in the area, either by hanging or sitting it on a ledge.   Birds are naturally afraid of snakes and won't nest near this.   Alot of warehouses use the hanging plastic snakes on rafters to keep birds from nesting in the rafters.
