Question:

How to keep from crying in a stressful situation?

I know sometime this week I will likely be involved in a disagreement with a professor. I received what I believe to be an unfair grade on an essay exam. I am going to set up an appointment to meet with the professor and find out where my mistakes were. I felt like I aced the exam and somehow ended up with a C. Essay exams are my strong point. I usually get better grades on essays than on other test formats. I am getting A's and B 's in all of my other courses and on all of her previous multiple choice exams.

If she can point out why she graded it the way she did, I will be ok with the grade. I am really trying to keep an open mind however knowing her and her previous exams I'm anticipating this will not be the case. This program and the minimum requirements for it are very important to me. I work my backside off to maintain my GPA. When it comes down to discussing the test I'm worried I may cry. I really really really do not want that. What can I do to hold back at least until I'm out of her office?

  1. Be confident. Present your feelings respectfully, logically, and with proof. Then hear out what your professor says. If it does not work out, take in what he/she says and improve upon your mistakes. Remember that professors are there to help you, not hurt you. Take it on as a lesson or challenge, not as an impossible task.

  2. Have lots of practice conversations between now and then about it. If you have a friend, family member, or pet who can "play her part" it will make it all the better.

  3. I just read that if you jut out your lower jaw, it's impossible to cry at the same time.  I'm waiting for a chance to try it, but you should as well.
