Question:

How to keep my 1980 XL500 from pinging?

well i have a 1980 honda xl 500 with a honed cylender and a new high performance piston.

but when the engine gets warm the piston gets hot enough that the fuel comebusts before the spark

octane boost helps a little but it still is a problem

how can i fix this.

  2. There are gasoline additives to accomodate this.

  3. There could be several reasons for this. The timing could be off just a smidgeon (did you put the cam in correctly?) Are the valve clearances within spec? Did the new piston change the compression ratio to the point that you need high test gasoline? What about the spark plug?.

    Here is something that happened to me once. I put a new in-line gas filter on my single cyclinder dirt bike. Problem was it wasn't quite big enough to pass enough gas to supply the carb at the rate needed and caused the bike to run very lean. The bike was knocking and pinging while I tried to figure out what was causing it. It wasn't till I holed a piston did I figure it out. Check your spark plug to see how it's burning and this may give you a clue to your problem.  Good Luck
