  1. you could try oxyclean (powder) and or tide with bleach alternative

  2. Warm wash separately [without mixing other clothes/coloureds]. Use bi-carb soda for the washing part and vinegar for the rinse [added to the warm rinse water]. Gently spin to nearly dry. NEVER use a dryer as the heat is not good for the fabric, colour or the earth. Once spun, gather together at the hem/bottom of the garment and give it two or three vigorous 'flicks'. Then turn the shirt upside down [the neck edge] and repeat the procedure. This will align the fibres and make it quite easy to hang the shirt by its bottom edge, using about/at least 5 pegs. Just turn an even amount folded over the line, peg and dry as normal in the sunshine and fresh air. [Any stains need to be treated according to the particular stains first, then proceed as above]. I agree with you - NO bleach! Not necessary and it will eventually destroy the fabric. The key is separate washing, no harsh chemicals or detergents/softeners  and blood heat water. Good luck!

  3. wash them in detergent, borax and warm water/ cold rinse. dry on medium until barely damp, then hang to dry.  you can also try bluing, which brightens the whites (careful, though, use too much and it does turn the clothing blue-ish...it's pretty old-school, but does work)
