Question:

How to know if granite was sealed before or not?

We got new countertops installed. It's light colored granite and everytime a small drop of water 'hits' it, it gets absorbed into the granite and leaves a dark spot, which dries later. It's not like I don't wipe off water spills, but I don't think granite is supposed to absorb water this fast. This leads me to thinking that granite has not been sealed. Do you think it's true?

  1. I also believe it has not been sealed.  All the stone counters I have seen would have beaded water spilled on them.

Be careful not to get it dirty before it can be fixed.  Oil would be really bad.

  2. Granite countertops even when sealed will Soak up water and Liquids depending on what sealer was used. I would Highly suggest purchasing a High end Impregnating Sealer and doing the whole kitchen. Rub it on let it sit for about 10 Minutes and then wipe off. You should notice a Big difference in water beading on the surface. Alot of countertop shops do not seal them when they are Installed. Some that do seal them use a non Impregnating sealer.
