Question:

How to know if puppy eats enough?

I have had her for about a week but it doesn't seem like she is eating enough. How much are puppies supposed to be eating at 9-10 weeks? She is very active, drinks plenty of water, very intelligent, not fussy, doesn't feel too skinny, but hardly eats. Any suggests on foods to feed her to make her eat more? She seems to love real meats (chicken, beef). I give her very little in her wet food so that she'll eat that but she still doesn't eat much of the wet food and hates her dry food.

  1. Would have been good questions to ask the person you bought the dog from before you bought it.  Each breed is different and grow at different rates.  They will eat them self sick if you keep feeding them so you need to find out from a breeder of your dog what is recommended.

  2. What kind of puppy is it?  If it is a small or toy breed you need to be very careful that she does eat enough or she will get hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and that can be life threatening.  If she is a medium or larger breed hypoglycemia isn't as common but you still need to make sure she is eating.  I never limit a puppies intake of food.  They are growing at an extraordinary rate and need all the calories they will consume.  Some things you can try to coax her to eat are raw or cooked eggs, cottage cheese, raw or cooked meats like turkey, chicken, beef - beef or chicken broth mixed in with her hard food, also if you can find some nutri-cal or forti-cal it is good for them too.  Try different types of canned puppy food as well.  If you find something she likes, stick with that.  The only thing with trying so many different types of food is it may give her diahrrea.  Good luck.

  3. i usually mix a little bit of wet and a little bit of dry food for my puppy.  i make him eat 2-3 times a day. but medium servings

    hope i helped

  4. Try purina alpo chicken flavor, i used it for 15 years with my german shepherd and he is very old! never had any health problems with him at all. The vets are stunned on how old he is, and healthy! I think the best way is to feed her that, and mix it with a little wet food.
