How to know it was a nickname or firstname, how could you know?

Since this is posted in the adoption section, I'll assume that you are looking for a particular person due to adoption but are not sure if the name provided to you is a first name or a nick name (like Bob can be a nick name for Robert).  The only thing I can suggest is to try searching with both names.  If you have a way to get more information such as birthdate, etc., perhaps that will help you also.
