How to know the age of african grey?

i have a pair of african greys so how will i know the age of my pair actually the breeder told me that they are of 2 years but i want to know how to determine their age some one please help me...

  1. Sorry, without a certificate from the breeder, it's just a guess. By the age of two they are fully developed and beginning to talk. They are fully feathered and their tail will be bright red with no black or grey as it had as a baby.


  2. You can take them to an Avain Vet, then he can guess withing about 5 years or so, if they are old, or younger bird he should be able to guess within a couple of months...

    But a breeder should have a band on these guys and should have a hatch date, that is if the breeder is honest. If he is not then the birds are more then likely at least 10 years old...

It is very hard to tell the exact age of an African Grey without a real certificate given to you by the breeder of its actual birth date, only an estimate.  However, if your bird is under 2 years, it will be easier. You can tell when African greys are still young if their eyes are black and a bird is over 1 year old if there is a whitish yellow iris on the outside of the eye.
