How to know what type of ram my computer is using?

I want to buy a new ram for my computer but there are like millions of types, how do I know what type is the right one for my computer with out opening because im gona to get lost

  1. Your going to have to either OPEN the box or figure out what kind of Motherboard you have.

    The mother board will have nomenclature on it that you can google that will allow you to figure out what it is.  

    Did you buy your computer form Dell or HP?  They usually have the motherboard that should be in it online.

    Another thing you could do is take some of the memory out and take it with you to Bestbuy.  They will be able to tell you the speed / type of it if you cannot figure it out on your own!


  2. Go to crucial.com and click the button 'scan my system'. You'll get the type, how much memory you can upgrade to and what configuration of memory will work in your computer. You can also buy it from them, but before doing that go to frys.com or newegg and see what they are charging for the memory.
