How to know when I'm ovulating with irregular periods?

My husband and I are trying to have another baby but my periods are really irregular so I don't know for sure when I'm ovulating. My last period started july 13, before that june 5, before that may 12! I felt some light cramping, like I was ovulating, on July 27 so we've been trying since then. When would be a good time to take a pregnancy test? becase with my track record I should get my period any day now. Thanks for any help!
