when i ask people "can i learn martial arts without an instructor?" most of them say no no no

if you do it alone you'll hurt yourself or you may lose many details and you may learn it incorrectly whether with 3Danimation or with DVD.

1- when i was about 10 years old i trained Karate but we shifted to the new building in another city and i lost my classes.

2- at 15 i started "Kung Fu Toa"(maybe typo) for 2 months but i had a trip and when i returned, my gym was closed and never turned open and i couldn't find my instructor. (you may feel this is a fiction but unfortunately it is not)

  1. you cant...well not real martial arts anyway

  2. no,because you are learning how to defend your self i mean in the street or tournaments you may receive punches and kicks so in learning you should get real with pain situation

  3. Just give it up already

  4. well you can learn parts of it.

before i joined any clubs buyed me a punching bag and started looking at expert video's on the i-net and i learned the basic tings like how to put the most power in you fist strikes and all basic kickbox kicks , taekwando , thai box (did this for 2years)

now i'am in martial art clubs and i must say not much of the members can give high kicks and low kicks , jumping kicks , fist attacks that hard as me. Only how to defent vs diffrent strikes was i bit new at the start because you cant practise this alone.

  5. the reason you will "hurt yourself" is because you will miss key elements in the mechanics that can only be picked up through correction by a teacher or direct demonstration and feeling the technique.

this is what makes a difference betwween simply "mimicking" the technique like an actor would do and actually "knowing it" and being able to apply it against a fully resisting opponent who is likewise trying to hurt you.

one gives you the appearance of knowledge, the other actual knowledge.

so would you rather have a mirage or a pool of water to drink?

going for the videos is the mirage, keep searching till you find the water.

EDIT: there has to be other arts around too, if you can't find a decent school that is non-sportative try looking for boxing programs or school wrestling. even if you are looking for something else, boxing will translate easily to any martial art and you can incorporate it into any skillset.  additionally you will get a feel for what its really like to have someone coming at you if your prior schools havent' trained like this already. as such you will be able to more adequately judge as to what will work and what won't in a fight.

there are others, but its hard to believe you can't even find a boxing gym or program or a judo program somewhere.

  6. through pain you learn dicipline and self control. you also gain a resistance to pain wich is needed in martial arts.

  7. first you have to take the red pill...

  8. First that link took me no where, so I can't read the rest of your woe is me story.

Secondly, poeple are poeple are poeple, Masters commoners alike. All have issues with integerty. My old Master picked up and left our old school without notice. Even though I was on a plan to become a Master under him. I didn't stop though. I just looked around for another gym.

It happens, but you just got to learn to roll with the punches. When someone moves your cheese are you going to sit there and hope it returns, or are you going to go out and look for more cheese?

  9. Learning to deal with pain  is part of Martial arts/ self defense. It may be the most important part. W hen you fight, chances are you may get hurt, whether you get hit, stabbed or shot, you have to keep moving, you have to keep fighting, you must prevail. If you survive the attack, it's a victory. Accepting pain and surviving is not just a physical skill or a martial skill, but a life skill, and one that we can all benifit from learning.

  10. You can only learn the theory.

Without the realistic part (translates to pain), knowing the theory without knowing how to apply it can hurt you even worse.

  11. Hey man no pain no game right?

  12. u can always learn that in ya dreams

  13. Martial arts can and will cause you pain if your not cautious and if the pain doesn't kill you, it will make you wise and stronger.. Pain teaches you not to make the same mistake. If you don't like pain you will try to avoid it by blocking and striking correctly.

Pain is like trouble it comes looking for you even if you don't look for it. Pain is a malady of life  we have to  learn  to live through it.  Pain is also like karma, if you give it you will receive it and pain is also like sowing, the more you do painful things the more pain you get.

pain might be a pain in the neck but without it things could be worse if we weren't able to feel it.

  14. There is no such thing. Pain will come if you truely train.

  15. The problem with learning from books and videos is that you have no way of critiquing yourself. You have no way of working with another person on the training that is necessary to get the "feel" of. I don't mean to be vague; however there are many subtle ways of doing some techniques that you just will never know if you are doing it right without a training partner and or someone skilled to watch you.

Much of what a martial artist learns is about timing and balance with an opponent. You can not get that from a tape. or book. There are good books out there that explain moves and applications very well, yet you need to make them work and you need to practice them in a real interactive setting.

It is a challange to teach someone in person. I would not want the responcibility of trying to get them to learn from my vidio or book.

  16. Pain is 100% mental, once you can block it out you can win any fight, but im afraid it takes pain to learn martial arts and how to block pain out.

  17. The only problem with learning a martial arts with out an instructor, is that you can hurt yourself. I wanted to do that but my instructor would rather me get into a good martial arts school and learn from the master.

So don't learn martial arts out of a book, or a movie. You will end up hurting yourself.
