Question:

How to litter train a rat?

I didn't even know rats could be trained to use a small litter inside their cage. I'm purchasing two rats in a little over a week and I like the sounds of the idea.

How is it done though?

  1. When you get them, observe for a day or two where they do the majority of their pooping. That's where you want to put the litter box. Pick up (hopefully with paper towels or gloves!) the p**p and put it into the litter box. That will help your rats learn what they're supposed to do with it. It might take a while, but if they have accidents just pick up the p**p and put it in the box again. My boy Templeton is completely litter trained. He never poops outside the box. With pee, though, they'll still likely go wherever they want. I disagree with the other answerer posted about forcing the rat to stay in the litter box.

  2. ok first whach what happens before it goes to the toilet on the ground (any sniffing around) stuff like that. then when it starts to do that again pick it up and put it on the small litter box it should then go in that. if is starts moving away from thelitter box and hasnt gone yet then put it backin the middle of it

    hope it helps.
