How to locate an old friend?

I've lost contact with an old friend who moved out of state years ago - I have their social security number and birthdate - what's the best way to locate this person without having to pay anything? I tried a reunion site with no luck and this person has a fairly common last name.

Google.com is always a good place to start.  Just type in their name and see what comes up.  Also, you can try some of the more popular networking sites such as Facebook or Myspace.  Do you know what school they went to, a lot of schools have a websites for former students, or classmates.com
