How to lock an interior door without ruining the doorframe?

So it's come to my attention that family members are stealing my stuff while I'm out of the house. I pay board to live in the house, so I believe I'm entitled to some security.

I want to attach a lock to the door, but with the minimal amount of damage to the doorframe and the actual door. Can anyone think of a way to do this?

  1. Change the door k**b to a keyed one.

  2. you can either change the door k**b to a keyed doorknob or a  deadbolt . but first you want to find out if you have a really old door k**b such as a mortise lock or a really old turn k**b if you have a mortise lock very common in houses over 60 years of age if this is the case you will need a locksmith to make a key for it if there is no existing key he will either impression or candle the the barrel and bolt key . if it is 40 years old there is a good chance that the bore hole will be smaller then todays standard bore ( the width and the back set is slightly larger than back then ) if this is the case I suggest that you purchase a lock called Defiant or Kwikset they are very simple to install it is just 6 screws involved 2 for the strike plate ( the part on the door frame ) 2 on the latch set ( the plunger ) and 2 on the actual handle itself very easy

good luck   If you have a problem with it give me a call and I'll

    walk you thru it

  3. Change the existing doorknob (passage or possibly privacy) to one that locks with a key(security or entry) You can get one to match so it will hardly be noticeable and will not harm the door or jamb. good luck.
