I found a baby turtle dove which has some adult feathers and can fly for a very short time, but I'm not sure what to feed it?

  1. If you live in the US...this is probably a Mourning Dove.  Or do you live in a country where Ringed-turtle Doves are native?  If this IS a wild native bird you should not be caring for it as it would be illegal.  If the bird is fully feathered, it is most likely a fledgling and has left the nest on it's own and it's parents are caring for it. It is normal for birds to leave the nest before they can fly.   You need to replace it where you found it..preferably in a scrub or tree so it is relatively safe from predators, and the parents should come back to feed it.  If it is unfeathered...then look for a nest and if you can find it...replace it into the nest.  Do not worry about your scent being on the chick..birds have a very poorly developed sense of smell and will NOT reject a baby that has been touched.  If you cannot find a nest, get the bird to a local wildlife rehab for it's best chance of survival.   Look for a rehab here:

If this is a pet bird..you can search the internet for care info.

  2. I'm not 100% sure, but I read some where the other day that they can survive for a short while untill the correct food is found on dry cat or dog food soaked in water to a oat meal consistacy. and dont give them water just put a bowl of water in with him and if he wants it he'll drink it.

  3. I would suggest giving it some wild bird seed and water. Watch to see if it eats and drinks on its own. If it doesn't, then you'll need to hand feed it or take it to a wildlife rehab. If you see the parents around you can try putting it back where you found it, but only if it has no visible injuries. Keep a close eye to make sure no predators get it. If all else fails, you'll need to find someone to care for it if you can't. Wildlife rehabs are best.

These should help a bit, and you should probably also join the forum. There's many experienced dove/pigeon rescuers and rehabbers there that can help. You might find one who lives in your area that could help as well. Look around the site and you should find everything you need. If not, just post and ask for help :)
