How to look my best in a school picture?

Question

I have dark brown hair, light blue eyes, light freckly skin.

In my latest picture my face looks long, and my eyes small and dark instead of big and blue like usual! :[

What color background will make me look good?

What color shirt should I wear?

My school pictures have never really been good, and I want to look better this year!

I don't think a background makes a person look bad.  It can however be the clothing and color choices.  

If you can choose your background, I would suggest something darker in the gray or blue tones.  That looks nice with any skin tone.

Your hair and makeup (if you wear makeup) should be natural, how you typically wear it day to day.  Of course if you always wear a ponytail, I would suggest to consider maybe wearing it all the way down or halfway up.

When choosing clothing, meduim to dark tones look pleasing on anyone.  Stay away from red's.  They tend to make even the skinniest person look heavy.  I think black or navy always looks nice.  The navy would also help compliment your eyes.  If you want your face to appear long and ovaled, wear something with a neck that comes to a "v".  For a rounder appearance to your face, choose a round neck, boat neck or turtlenecked shirt.  Lastly.  Choose something long sleeved.  This is because we want to see your face.  If you have flesh of your arm showing at the bottom of the picture, the eye will be distracted and won't first look at your face.

Lastly, your smile.  Try to keep a happy thought in your mind so your eyes are smiling with your mouth.

SMILE! It will brighten up the photo more than any article of clothing ever could! Plus you'll look your best when you're happy! Looking back at it will bring back fond memories, trust me. For my Grade 11 picture I did a toothless smile (not showing teeth) for the first time and it was horrid! I looked so sad! I am definitely going to go back to my trademark grin!
