  1. you should treat your 5 year old

how YOU want to raise it. (:

  2. Are you asking because you have a particular problem and are not sure if it is normal?  Feel free to ask - there's plenty of people here who have had kids that age.

    Edited to add:

It is pretty normal, boys tend to get easily distracted at school.  My son has had similar issues over the years.  I have found the best solution to be to talk to the teachers and ensure that he is not sitting with the other kids that are involved.  At the start of each school year these days, I talk to my son't teacher and specify that I would prefer he be separated from certain friends in class.

Also have a talk to him about it (regularly, as they lapse all the time!!).  If he is good at home and only having these problems at school, there is a fair chance he is a bit of a follower.  You need to help him learn to be able to make his own decisions.

I'm still working on it with my son, but every time I have the talk, and talk to the teacher it improves for a few months and then he lapses.  So I just keep at it and probably will have to until he has a wife that can do it for me!!!! LOL

  3. There are no normal 5 year olds, each one is an individual.  Obviously your son IS unruly.  He can't follow the class rules.  You need to sit him down and tell him that when in school he has to follow the rules.  Obviously you haven't taught him to be disciplined.

  4. It seems pretty normal for your son's teacher to send bad reports home for the behavior you described.  Behavior like that also tends to spread like wildfire in a five year old classroom, so if one child is being a distraction it then turns into a whole bunch!  Their little attention spans are so small and if there is a group of children distracting the class and taking up the teacher's time then it's hard for her to get anything accomplished!   You need to reinforce the rules of the classroom at home with your son.  Although it is only the first month of school and he is still getting accustomed to the rules of the classroom, I think that your help in this matter would be much appreciated by his teacher.  Things have changed since you and I have gone to school.  It is not just socialization and playtime anymore.  Children are expected to read and write by the end of kindergarten now!  Some schools have even gone to all day kindergarten and have done away with nap time as well!  Maybe you could go in and volunteer in the classroom and help out the teacher.  I'm sure she would be so appreciative of the extra help, especially if she has an unruly class like you described.
