How to mail a letter to Australia from US?

I'm in the USA and I want to mail a birthday card to Australia. Can I put the right amount of postage and mail it myself, or do I have to go to the post office? I know it won't be more than 2 ounces so I plan on putting $1.80 USD postage on it.

  1. Address you're card correctly i.e

    123 Big Bird Lane

    Muppetville  NSW  2500

    AUSTRALIA

2500- is the postcode of Sydney, more sure you look this up before sending http://www1.auspost.com.au/postcodes/

Get one of those airmail stamps from the postoffice. I don't know if $1.80 is sufficient for overseas postage, though weight wise you wouldn't have a problem. I suggest you put your details on the back, so if theres a problem it will be returned to you.

  2. Make sure you put an armail sticker on it or it may be sent by sea and take 6 weeks.

  3. well i do not know where the other answer is posting stuff from but being a expat aussie i will tell you know you better go into the post office other wise your card or mail will not be getting there to australia i asked the postal worker one day this question & if it is going outside of the country USA you got to take it inside

  4. If it's just a letter, fill out the correct addresses and other details. Make sure you include AUSTRALIA at the end of the address so it'll be easier.

All you need to do is to take the letter up to the assistants at the Post Office as you'd do for other letters and they will determine how much it'd cost.

  5. Just put the stamps on it and drop it in the box.  For parcels you need a customs declaration, but not letters.
