Wau or Layang-Layang is kite in Malay.  While Layang-Layang is grossly referred to the general type of kites, Wau is made reference to the traditional type of Malay kites. There are many type of Wau. The most widely known is the Malay Kite or locally known as Wau Kikik; the simple tailess diamond shape kite similar to the Eddie Kite.

The other widely known types are; the Moon Kite (Wau Bulan), Cat Kite (Wau Kucing), Woman Kite (Wau Jalabudi). They are considered as the National Kites and are made compulsory items in the national kite competition. The Leaf Kite (Wau Daun) is often made optional in the natioanl competition. There are many other types of Wau that are popularized by some states in Malaysia; namely Quail Kite (Wau Puyuh), Peacock Kite (Wau Merak), Hawk Kite (Wau Helang), Hornbill Kite (Wau Kenyalang) and others.
