  1. You can change the width of ALL columns in an Excel column bar graph by first creating the bar graph then right click on one of the columns and select Format Data Series from the pop-up menu and then select the Options tab and play with Overlap and Gap Width variables. BUT this only works for ALL the bars and doesn't allow bars with different widths.

The closest that I could find to have individual size reflect the data was to create a Bubble chart. If your primary value data is in one column and the size is in the adjacent column select this group of data, click the chart icon and select Bubble. You can accept the default settings or you can order the result by selecting the Series tab and giving X Values a range within your data set (either column A or B).

You could also try using images for each data set and manually giving each column a unique image (but this hard work and totally manual without the ability to link your data to the width of the graphic manually). To do this, go to Paint and create a graphic that is solid column that fits half of the image while the remaining part of the screen is the same colour as your chart background. Save that image as col50pc.bmp. Do the same to create images of wider or narrower columns (but keep the image area the same) and save them with meaningful names like col75pc or col25pc. In Excel create your column chart as normal. Clicking a column selects all columns. Click again to select an individual column. Now right click and select Format Data Point. On the Patterns tab click on Fill Effects. Select the Picture tab and click on Select Picture. Choose one of your column images (eg col50pc). Click OK twice to return to the chart. The column is filled with the image. Although the real column is not wider or narrower, the column that you see is narrower because half of the image is the same colour as your chart background. Repeat this process for each column.

Very clumsy but I hope this helps.
