How to make a mock silent movie with a home vid camera + a PC?

It's my sister's 30th birthday party coming up in a couple of weeks, and it's going to be an exciting 1920's themed party, all very glamourous... and I want to do a funny novelty home video for her party (about her life so far) and make it as close as possible to the look and "feel" of the silent movie era.

I have a video camcorder and Ulead VideoStudio 7. I'm sure I could probably edit it into black and white no sweat, but how could I go about re-creating the "jerky" frames-per-second continuity that is characteristic of silent movies?

  1. Have a look at Virtualdub and its plugins - there's a useful looking one at the 2nd link.  They're both free!  Adding a movie projector sound effect would be a nice touch.

  2. Try inserting blank title frames in between.  You'd have to play around with the results until you're satisfied.  You'd have to put in a lot of them.  I know it would be tedious, but I bet it'd work.  You'd want to make your movie short - probably not longer than 10 minutes.  You don't have enough time to fiddle with anything longer.  Good luck!
