  2. You can get crystals growing in a jam jar.  I bought my son a kit, but you can probably get the raw materials separately.

    Basically you put the powdered crystal 'base' into the jar, add water and heat until it's dissolved. Then you have options: You can let the crystals form as the liquid cools, they will grow into amazing shapes OR hang an object (coin or small, clean stone, in the solution from a thread punched through the lid.

    The crystals will grow on the object making crazy shapes.

    You'd have to check on the correct chemicals to use, but you can do it with salt or sugar and get good results, adding food colouring to the solution if you like. Good luck!
