Question:

How to make a tub/shower with tile?

I want to take out my existing ceramic tub and create a stand stand-in shower, but I'd also want to build the front lip of the shower tall enough so that the shower could also hold water like a tub. Anyone ever done this and can tell me some specific directions? Thanks

  1. You will have to lay forms and build this front lip of reinforced concrete, and will be a real b*tch to find a shower pan that will fit this.

I'd call a contractor to assess the feasibility of the project.

Did you know your house is worth less if you convert a full bath to a 3/4 bath? (Which is what you would do by removing a tub and installing a shower)

  2. I have done this in the past for people with lots of money to spare. It takes a lot of planning and diagrams. There's just not enough space here for this.

I don't think you'll find a project like this anywhere due to the complicated instructions when they can simply buy the product made and, install it.

  3. Building the tub/shower combo is not a super easy project and to tell you how to do it on here would take a lot of time and effort on anyones part.

Go to home depot and look for a book there that can give you step by step directions.

  4. Purchase a shower pan the size you will need to fit in the space.  They sell them in all shapes and sizes.

Prepare your plumbing and do NOT forget the overflow outlet you see at the top of the tub.

at the front of your tub/shower you will need to build a knee wall the height of you tub.  This will be made of two by fours just like the framing of your walls.

Install your concrete sheeting and tape and float it just as you do the rest of the  bath walls, after you get your shower pan installed.

Tile it, grout it, seal it.

I have done this on many high end homes for people who want a custom shower.  The ones I've done were not "tubs", but rather walls with the center area cut down to allow you to walk into the shower.  Building the wall all the way across will be a lot easier.
