Having a little trouble with this one- I'm doing a free project, and have only a few weeks to complete a 20 by 23 foot area with pebbles and larger rocks that have been excavated.

Can a wall be built with irregular rocks in a straight line?

Do I need the pebbles underneath it as a base?

And, can it be done in a format that looks kind of like a pyramid, with a pointy top?

I can't figure out how else to get odd-shaped rocks to sit.

The thing is, I picked out many flat-ish stoned for the base, but the rest are odd-shaped.

  1. As with building a brick wall...you need a layer of mortar between each layer of stone.  To get the wall straight, place a stake at each end where you intend to put the wall and use a string as a straight line marker then build the stone wall along the line to make sure it is straight.  Yes, it can be built into a pyramid shape using mortar to hold it. Use the larger stones near the bottom and smaller ones as you go up. No, you do not need pebbles as a base.

The fun of building a stone wall is taking the time to figure where each stone will fit by trying a few in each spot.

Good luck and have fun with it.
