How to make airline reservation without paying for it and for how long it will be kept?

ALL online places want full price paid and all their fares are non refundable, so how can I make a reservation for visa application and be able to cancel it in case my visa is not issued? Thank you.

You can't do this for more than 24 hours without paying.  You can, however, buy refundable tickets.

Many online sites (Travelocity, Expedia, etc.)  provide for you to select refundable fares.  You usually need to use their advanced search options.   For example, at Travelocity, choose more options, then choose the "First Class/Refundable fare option". Expedia, Kayak, all have this option, but you must go to whatever advanced options they have.

You can make a reservation directly with the airline and request a refundable fare, also.  



Note that refundable fares are significantly more expensive than non-refundable fares.
