How to make hair look realistic when drawing with pencil

  1. The most important thing I've found that helps, is to remember that hair is not flat, and it consists of both highlights and shadows.

    Start slowly but sketching the outline of the hair your going to draw. Make some slightly darker lines where the shadows would naturally fall, and leave the places where highlights would be light.

    You just have to draw what you see, but the key is to first go slowly. Many people, included me, go too fast and get impatient. Just take it slow, and it may take a few trys- just keep practicing.

  2. Very lightly draw the outline of the hair area around the hair, so lightly you can barely see it. This will allow you to work on the texture and think less about the relation to the real picture.

    When drawing the actual hair, use different amounts of pressure - for lighter areas press lightly, and darker areas use more pressure.
