I have 5 horses and we are spending so much money on horse feed (plus the prices have gone up) is there any way to make my own horse feed, without spending so much?

  1. If this was an option, I am sure we would all be doing this by now. I think the only answer is to turn them out and let them munch on grass for as long as it's there. But you won't have that option come winter, depending on where you live.

  2. If you want to make your own feed be prepared for a lot of work.  You can talk to a local feed store or possibly local farmers to get an idea of what you want, but you will still have to buy whatever grains that you want in the sweet feed, probably some type of supplement, and milasses to hold it together.  Then you need a hammermill (basically a big PTO driven mixer) and someone brave enough to dump in the ingredients to mix it all in.  A good option to this would be to feed like half sweet feed and half oats (from a local farmer or mill)- still costly but not nearly as much as sweet feed and dry grain also keeps longer than sweet feed.

  3. Thxs for posting this question! I was actully wondering the same thing!

    lol

  4. I would not touch your horses food unless you know what your doing nutrition and vitamin wise. All I can suggest is give them more grazing and less grain.

  5. There aren't any ways that I know of, though many horses don't need feed and are fine on just hay/grass.
