  1. To carry out electrolysis, take a steel vessel. Add water to it and common salt. Induce two graphite rods(you can take them out from a normal cell) and connect them two the two ends of a battery. Let the current flow. After a while, you will obtain hydrogen being evolved at the cathode( the rod connected to the -ve end of the battery).

  2. by electrolysis

  3. The production of H2 and O2 by electrolysis is simple.

Dissolve some baking soda in some water.  The NaHCO3 will be the electrolyte so that water can conduct electricity.

The simplest electrolysis "experiment" would be to then drop a 9V batter into the solution.  But you want something more elegant than that.

There are many, many pages on the web devoted to the electrolysis of water.  I would take two pencils and cut off the erasure ends and sharpen both ends of each pencil.  These will be your graphite electrodes.  They can be stuck through some cardboard at an angle and down into the sodium carbonate solution.  A small bottle can be filled with water and then inverted so that its mouth is over one of the pencil electrodes.  When a 9V battery is connected to the pencil points sticking up from the cardboard, H2 and O2 gases will be formed.  The hydrogen will form at the pencil connected to the negative pole of the battery.  The bubbles will rise into the inverted bottle and displace the water, eventually giving you a bottle of H2 gas.
