How to make icing/frosting for a cupcake made out of polymer clay?

Question

my sisters and i have been trying to make cupcakes out of polymer clay. we've been making those "frosting" using those "snakes" of clay.. we tried using TLS to get a more realistic look of the frosting but we can't get it right. what proportion can we use to do this? and do we need to put something else like a piece of clay on top of the cupcake base for the frosting to be high or something? HELP!!!
