  2. you say boat repairs. do you mean, like hull damage etc? because there is a technique used to fix that sort of thing.

involves taking a mold off the hull. its simple and effective, but takes a little time. small holes etc often just patching works best, but if its a substancial repair. working on the other side of the hull, or deck or whatever your repairing, mark out an area, large enough to cover the damage. apply wax and releasing agent to the area, then apply a coat of gel coat to the area. let that cure for a while, remembering, gel coat wont cure completely exposed to air, so just want a tacky feel. do it early afternoon, be good next morning. then apply 2 or 3 layers of chop strand mat to the area. let that cure, then release it. you now have a perfect mold for the other side.

cut out the damaged area, making sure not to cut bigger than your mold. feather the edges down starting about 2 inches from the edge inwards. so its tappered. place the mold over the hole, attach with small screws to hold it tightly in place then gelcoat and fiberglass from the inside.

when done, remove the mold, and bingo, it done. use gelcoat to fill the small s***w holes you made and buff to remove any edges and blend it in. wont get a perfect look, but without redoing the entire hull, your not going to. painting a hull wont last long.

method works with hulls, decks, cabins etc. as long as you can access the inside of the area, and it is a symetrical area, as in, the other side is the same. bows and so forth, often change shape too much and you cant get a good mold. works on RVs (where i use it most now) too. on front caps.

dont worry about all this epoxy resin and so forth. people seem to swear by that and think it should be used for everything. it shouldnt. polyester resin is cheaper, and easier to work with. making molds out of epoxy will cost you a lot more and will benefit you in no way. most boats are built with polyester, only high end performance or boats that require higher levels of strength use epoxy.

this is also a quick overall idea. practice before trying for real and consult experts if possible for the best mixing and so forth, as that varies by temperature, material, application. im just giving you the basic idea. not a how to
