How to make low ceiling look high

Question

Our living room has wood paneling painted white on the walls and ceiling. What are some tips to make the walls look nice and the ceiling look high?

The 2nd person had Great Ideas. don't do dark colors though. that makes a room look small. (My bedroom is brown, 1 window...so yeah, it looks small.)

If you paint the ceiling a lighter color than the walls, it'll look higher.

Adding mirrors to your decor will do wonders for the size of the room.  I hung 2 mirrors (5'x2') in a small room and it gave the appears of openings to another room giving a spacious effect.  You may want to go to your local Walmart and buy the inexpensive full length mirrors and try it out to see if it will give the effect that pleases you.  You can always take them back!  

You can paint dimensions on the ceiling.

euhm, I dunno much about decorating but I once heard that choosing a good color for your walls ( in case you wanna color them, I didn't quite understand if you did) that gives the illusion of "more" space is suitable for this ( I think darker colors give that impression) and tall lamps are also good for the illusion of height to your room.

vertical stripes to a white ceiling, like a candy striped wallpaper,  It would be nice to have a skylight open to the roof if possible.
