How to make many layers in photoshop?

I am new at photoshop. Here's what I'm usually doing :

Open_-----> File ___-----> I have the picture of a girl in photoshop. (It's Called Layer 1 in the picture)So now I want to paste the " popękana skóra" as in the tutorial , but , when I do Layer----> New----> and then doing the same open- file thingie , a new file opens deleting my first picture.

Ok. Just HOW TO MAKE A NEW LAYER?

LIKE I DO , LAYER--> NEW---> and then what ? How can I paste to the new layer the" popękana skóra" like it is in the photo>?HELP!!

First: Have you got the layer pallette open?

IF SO then just click the new layer button. which is the one next to the rubbish bin, second from the left at the bottom of the palette menu.

OR select your whole picture, copy, then paste into same picture and you should be asked if you want to paste as new layer??
