Question:

How to make my photos smaller?

When I put my photos onto my laptop from the memory card, they come up really huge - file size and size of the actual photo. I use a programme called Irfanview or something like that and make each photo smaller, one by one. It takes me forever - is there an easier and quicker way to do this (preferably without having to buy software)???

Tks

  1. I don't recommend making your digital photos smaller. The reason being that you are removing detail and resolution from the photo. You won't notice this on the computer monitor because it displays at a relatively low resolution -- but if you ever want to make prints then you will notice a loss of image quality.

It is easier and quicker to look at some removeable storage options -- and transferring your photos. You can get an external hard drive of around 500 gigabytes (or even more -- up to terrabytes) and transfer your photos to it. Or if you have a dvd drive with writing capabilities then you can save all your digital photos onto dvd's.

The other option like the other answerer said is to set your camera to take smaller pics. But why have a nice camera capabable of capturing all that detail and image quality if you are not going to use it? It's much better to take large images with lots of resolution that you can make really excellent prints from.

  2. For all new photos, change the settting on your camera to take smaller photos. It should be in the menu settings somewhere.

For your current pictures,  try a batch image resizer program like:

  5. I had exactly the same problem and found this program. It is excellent !

I used it to put all my favourite photos onto my phone at the correct size for my phone. Which allowed me to get loads on using very little memory !
