Question:

How to make "white" horses whiter?

I'll be riding a grey horse in a show. Technically he's white because he has pink skin though...

I'm wondering how to make him look really good. The show is in two weeks so tips that take time are welcome too!

Thanks in advance!

  1. DO NOT PUT BLEACH!

you cannot change the horses color , just wash him and groom him very well.

  2. I have a Palamino, I use washing powder on his tail and mane (NOT ON HIS BODY!)..... Make sure you wash it out really really well and it comes up beautifully! =) for the rest of him, I'd just get white gloss shampoo and scrub it in and out with a hard bristled brush he should come up quite nice!

  3. douse him in white paint

  4. Hello,

We have 7 paints that have LOTS of white on them.  Here are our top picks for making white coats, manes and tails bright and clean.

Here is one premade, ready to order solution, it works best on the body and isn't what we prefer for the mane and tail:

FOR extra soft, body, mane and tail we use either of these shampoos.  The Orvus is HIGHLY concentrated and you get LOTS of product for your money!:

NOW for the SECERT ingredient!  YOU don't have to pay for pre-made whitening shampoos, which are expensive and you only get a small quantity.  WE add this to either of the above shampoos, or a shampoo of your choice.  LATHER, let sit on the coat, mane, and tail for 10 minutes and rinse throughly.

YOU only add this whitener SPARINGLY to your shampoo, only a few drops are needed for the whole horse!  This bottle will last years with one horse.  YOU get this right in the grocery store, in the laundry section!

ONE key thing for washing horses is to RINSE and RINSE more...  YOU don't want any soap left, it will YELLOW the coat over time!

Have fun at the shows and GOOD luck!

YOUR best bet is to wash your horse a few times over next couple of weeks before the show, to get the coat extra bright.

While this link recommends putting the bluing in the rinse water we normally add it to the shampoo.  If you did both it would probably work pretty good.

  5. There is a savior of a shampoo called "Purple Power" for white horses. I would give the horse 2 baths the day before the show using the Purple Power all over him. Make sure to put some sort of cover on him when he is clean so he STAYS clean. I use this on my horse's sock and it is perfectly white after I scrub it with Purple Power. Hope this helps! :) Good luck! <3

  6. For the long term and other shows, get him on a high quality food.

I add Ground Flax Seed to the feed of the horse I lease, and he is SHINY. It truley works.

For the short term, keep a fly sheet on him. First, put a spray on him. I like Miracle Coat. Then, put the fly sheet on. The sheet will move the hair around when he is walking, and it will be just like grooming 24/7.

For shampooing, EZ Groom is great.

  7. "QUICK SILVER" shampoo. You can find it at most tack shops.

  8. Do not try and dye your horse! Olive oil is healthy and gives a nice natural sheen! Good Luck!

  9. I would use quick silver i think it works the best. Using  cowboy magic green spot remover can help him stay clean. There are so many options just ask your local tack shop. On my white pony i only use quick silver and she turns BRIGHT white.

  10. BLEACH....jkjkjk i dunnno

  11. ok so heres my instructions lol:

    1. bathe your horse 2 days before the show with this shampoo:

    http://www.horse.com/Horse-Grooming/Sham...

    2. put him in his stall so he wont get himself dirty

    3. the next day (day before the show)  bathe him again with that shampoo and then put a sheet on him and put him back in his stall.

    4. pull/cut his mane and braid/band his mane and then put a mane tamer or a sleazy on him (day before the show)

    5. The day of the show groom him really well and then if there happens to be some kind of manure or dirt spot on him spray this on him:

    http://www.horse.com/Horse-Grooming/Coat...

    6. put your coat shiny enhancer stuff on (not around the saddle area though)

    7. soak that boy in flyspray (not literally but you get the point)

    8. and since he's white this will look really good..... take a little bit of baby oil and rub it around his muzzle and around his eyes but make sure you dont get any in his eyes..... this will make his face look cleaner and shiner

  12. Braid his main and tail and brush him till he is spotless oh dreess him with clean tack with a pink pad to match is skin he will look good

  13. Have you heard of the shampoo called 'purple' it is made by several different saddlery's and is available from lots of saddlery stores. It brings out a beautiful white brilliant shine.

You could also use some black makeup for highlighting around his eyes, muzzle and inside of his ears, and under his tail (between his back legs).

There is also a liquid (can't remember the name) its a bit like a die that people with white horses use. A top horse that competes on our NZ circuit, has his legs blackened from above the knees then they leave a white strip about 1cm above his blackened out hooves. He looks amazing - but he does have a team of people working on him!

Sunlight soap bars (can you get those old fashioned yellow bars) they are brilliant at cleaning white socks and tails, so I presume they would be good as an all white wash.

And some talcum powder for on the day would be handy to have in the tack box, along with white chalk for touch ups. I would take on show day a 2ltr container of water a cloth and sunlight soap bar, for cleaning off marks on the day.

Best of luck with the show.

At the saddleries you can get a rubber thing - a bit like a curry comb - it has zigzag pieces of rubber all over it, when you wash your horse, you poor the shampoo onto this and use it to wash the horse. Its soft rubber and gets right into the base of the hairs.

  14. Dump the horse in bleach : ).

  15. There are horse shampoos that are made specifically for white or gray horses. That should help make him whiter. Also, for those pesky stains, I have heard that a water/iodine mixture works wonders. But if you leave it on too long, the iodine stains.

For show day, corn starch and baby powder can help make him whiter. If he gets a stain on show day, baby powder or corn starch can help cover it up.

  16. special shampoo, or talk to your vet.

  17. Bleach??

    KIDDING!!!

Give him a bath, I think  they have special shampoo for white dogs?

  18. go to a saddlery and buy a special whit enhancer shampoo or soap.

  19. Clean and brush him really good. Do not bleach your horse.

The Celts though, used to use limes to bleach their hair. It can be irritating to his skin though so if you are thinking about it, you ahould do a patch test first.

I would really just do the clean and brush though.

  20. There are a number of Whitening shampoos for horses try Blue Frost Whitening Shampoo & Conditioner, Extremely Blueberry Horse Whitening Shampoo or Super Whitening Horse Shampoo are a few one to try. Be careful shampooing the mane and forelock right before the show as it can tend to get very fluffy/full. Lemon juice is a natual way to whiten as well, although I would belive the shampoos are just as good if not better.

  21. what i found out with working with my horses is if you take a shampoo or baby shampoo and rub it in take a rough rock. Not one that is to righ but one that is rough enough not to hurt your horse. take the rock and rub your horse where you put the shampoo. I know it sounds crazy but it works. If you do this for 3-4 days it should make your horse really white. If it doesn't work your horse is grey. hope that helps and good luck at the show

  22. Tide laundry soap always worked for me with white animals!

  23. ask michael jackson who did his skin. that's all u need to know ;]

also feed ur horse more milk!

(ur horse may be more sensitive to the sun after the change)

  24. I would use quicksilver I use it and it gives the horse a white glow you can find it probley in your local tack store.

  25. Quick silver works well

  26. There is a product out there called "White as Snow" It's a shampoo for horses that has dye in it t make your horse more vibrant and more white.

I'm sure if you google it, it will pop up. It's in horse magazines all the time.

The company that makes it also makes "Black as Night" This is what I used on my horse when he was faded to dark bay during the summer. The shampoo made him from faded to beautiful with a healthy coat again.

I hope my advice helped :)

  27. i was gonna pass on this question, but i figured i'll give you what we did for my mare (also white).

the purple shappoo they sell at tack stores... works wonders beyond words.

they had/have a shappoo called show white (it's blue) use that first, then any areas that arent comming as clean go over in the purple (you cant miss the purple stuff, it's bright purple and almost every tack store has it)

pick out every last piece of dirty shaving/poo/anything dirty in the stall the night before.

go early, really early, and use the above two mentioned products if there are any stains on the coat.

i would suggest another product, but it wont do too much good for just 2 weeks notice. we used to feed our horse a natrual/herb/suppliment, it was for their joints.... but what it also ended up doing was making their coat look amazing, i'd have people come up to me and ask what i did to make their coats look that good.

anyway, those are some of the things we used to do. (there was so much we did for showing.. lol)

  28. Show glo white is great stuff
